Eggquisite: Delightful Egg Delicacies Across the Globe!

To be honest, I have to admit that egg is one of the first food items I learned to cook, and therefore it carries some nostalgic weight in terms of childhood breakfasts (for me). They are among the most all-around diverse ingredients in the world. I mean, its versatility can never bore you! Fry, poach, grill, bake, mix, slice, boil or whatever you feel like for your love for eggs! And since there are no limitations, it is no surprise that there are countless egg dishes from around the world.

Each of these dishes highlights a culture’s signature spices and classic cooking techniques which makes them all totally incredible (and mouthwatering, of course). With these varieties we can see how an egg goes beyond simple pan-frying, instead of relying on baking, poaching, steaming, rolling, and even deep-frying.

So, here is a list of some egg dishes around the world to spice up your daily routines:

Egg Drop Soup –China

Egg Dishes
Egg drop soup or egg flower soup

It’s a Chinese soup of boiled chicken broth with wispy beaten eggs right into it so that they cook in the broth as little flakes and threads, all of which are delicious. Feel free to add condiments such as pepper or finely chopped scallions, some cilantro, or pieces of crab meat to the soup. Light flavours and clear broth of this egg dish will totally hit the right spot. This is perfect, especially when you’re feeling under the weather or its rainy or cold outside or simply when you are just in a mood for a good bowl of soup. Offered as one of the main dishes in American-Chinese cuisine, it also called egg flower soup, a literal translation of its Chinese name.

Shakshuka-Tunisia/Middle East

Egg Dishes
Shakshuka with pita bread

This single-skillet dish combines breakfast, lunch and dinner in a spicy blend of tomatoes, chilli peppers, onions, various spices and, of course, poached eggs. A favourite in the Middle East and Northern Africa, this egg-dish might look pretty fancy but it is quite easy to prepare. Though it is of Tunisian origin, Shakshuka is cooked with its own spin in different Middle-Eastern regions to suit the different tastes from mild to spicy.  Enjoy it with a slice or two of challah bread for maximum sauce intake.

Huevos Divorciados- Mexico

Egg Dishes
Mexican fried huevos divorciados

This authentic Mexican breakfast has two fried eggs, are separated by a line of refried beans. The name of this old classic translates to “divorced eggs” because of the plating of the dish. One egg is doused with salsa rojo and the other is coated in salsa verde, turning this egg dish into a truly complementary pairing.

The yolk isn’t separated from the whites of the eggs here and each of them is nestled on its own crispy tortilla. Due to this with each bite of this savoury dish, you can get a satisfying crunch in each bite.

Eggs en cocotte (or œufs en cocotte) – France

Baked Egg Oeuf en Cocotte with Mushroom

A traditional eggs en cocotte is a delicious, individual portion of eggs baked in cream and butter topped off with bacon and some herbs. This super simple yet tasty dish can be made heartier with potatoes and leeks added to the mix. Start your day with hot Oeufs cocotte either with toast or strips of bread to dip in the egg yolks.

Quiche Lorraine- Germany

Made with bacon, swiss cheese and onions, that mingle in perfect harmony amidst the eggs and cream, this timeless classic are perfect for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner or just an indulgent snack! Its flaky butter crust filled with a mixture of egg and thick layers of cheesy is both rich and scrumptious. You can even add seafood in here since the open-faced pastry crust shows off the colourful ingredients. Originally from Germany, Quiche Lorraine is a very traditional brunch dish now.

Tamagoyaki- Japan

Egg Dishes
Dashimaki-Tamago

This Japanese-style omelette is a sweet, cake-like snack. It is a delicate omelette made with tightly rolled sheets of cooked egg layered on top of each other and, seasoned with soy sauce and sometimes dashi. Although tamagoyaki is typically a breakfast dish it can also be found lunchtime bento boxes or can be served as a part of a sushi meal.

Egg Curry – India

Egg Dishes

Indian egg curry is all kinds of delicious. The eggs are hard-boiled, then cooked in a savoury onion and tomato gravy which is spiced with red chilli, coriander, and turmeric masala. Pair this with steamed basmati rice, roti, or paratha and you have yourself a hearty and satisfying meal. This flavour packed meal is a perfect comfort meal on your plate.

Kwek kwek or Tokneneng  – Philippines

Egg Dishes
Kwek Kwek – deep fried quail eggs coated with batter served with soya sauce and vinegar dip

Both these are popular Filipino street items made by deep-frying orange tempura-like batter covered hard-boiled eggs. The only difference is that; Tokneneng is made with chicken eggs while Kwek Kwek is traditionally made from quail eggs. This traditional delicacy is usually served with spiced vinegar-based dip.

Scotch Eggs- Scotland

Egg Dishes

Take the classic British Breakfast pairing of Eggs and sausage to a completely next level with the Scotch Eggs. For this dish, a hard-boiled egg is wrapped in sausage meat, coated in breadcrumbs and then deeply fried (or baked) till its crunchy and golden brown. Serve it with hot gravy sauces or some Scottish cheddar cheese for some next-level snacking.
